Do you know the way to Flatford Mill?

As the coach driver approached, I wondered what he was going to say. I certainly wasn’t expecting ‘Do you know the way to Flatford Mill?’

Ironically, Tracey and I were about to leave Dedham and walk alongside the river that runs to Flatford Mill and so we knew the way but only down the  footpath.

We’ve never driven to Flatford Mill from Dedham and so we couldn’t tell the driver whether to turn North or South out of the car park. The driver knew that Flatford was to the East and slightly to the south, so his instinct was to turn south and so that is what he did. A few minutes later, the bus came back past us heading north along the correct route and the driver grinned and shrugged his shoulders as he came past.

This got me thinking about how you can only effectively show people the way if you have already traveled that way yourself.

If the coach full of people were able to and they wanted to walk, we could have happily shown them the way. In fact we did come across some lost ramblers an hour or so later and we were able to direct them along the pathways that we are familiar with.

If you’re a Christian, are you growing in your faith? Are you everyday experiences of God ones that are meaningful and worth sharing?

It would be tragic if we have really come to believe that Christianity is just about church going and a bit of do gooding.

Christianity is about being a disciple of Jesus and this involves following him and letting him work in our lives.

Being a disciple involves becoming like your master and at times this can be uncomfortable as we let go of things and embrace what God wants for us but ultimately being Jesus’ disciple leads to fulfillment in life.

Are we ready to become disciples of Jesus who are ready, willing and able to make more disciples?

The way to flatford millWhen I got home from my walk I went to google maps and found out how you can drive to between Flatford Mill and Dedham . I now have the knowledge of the route and if a random coach driver asks me the way I will know.

God has given us the Bible as a road map through life and when we are being led somewhere new, we have it to show us the way.

What has God shown you that you could pass on to others?

This isn’t just about mature Christians teaching others. Over the years I have learnt so much from new Christians and children as I see God at work in their life. We really can all disciple one another if we are truly following Jesus!

You see, there is no such thing as Christians who have arrived. We are all on a journey following Jesus.

How will we help and inspire one another in our journey as disciples of Jesus?
