The One Where My Daughter Left Me Speechless

So, we were discussing how to interpret a picture and I knew what I was expecting my daughter to say but her answer left me speechless.

We sometimes use a creative form of prayer called ‘prayer pictures’ in church where we project some images on a screen. The children are invited to pick one at a time and then each one relates to a brief prayer focus.

My daughter mentioned the other day that we haven’t used prayer pictures in church for a long time and so we have agreed that she and I will put some together for Sunday.

happyI reminded her about this at breakfast, suggesting that she think about it and that we would work on it after school. She instantly replied that she had the first picture in mind already and she described a big smile.

I have used smiley prayer pictures before and usually the prayer focus is something like ‘tell God what you are happy about’ or perhaps something about joy. When I asked my daughter what focus we could use for that picture I was expecting her to say something along the lines that I was thinking but her reply left me speechless.

She said ‘we make God smile’.

What a wonderful reminder at the start (or at any time) of the day!

As Jesus was being baptized, God smiled as a voice from heaven said ‘this is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased’.

God really does delight in us:

‘For the Lord your God is living among you.
    He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs’.
                                                                    Zephaniah 3.17

Take some time to think about this Bible verse.

How does it change the way you view God?

How will it change the way that you live today?

Hi, my name is Graeme and I’m married to a very patient wife. We have 4 children, 2 rabbits, a terrapin (and not a lot of peace and quiet!). I’m a Regional Minister for the Eastern Baptist Association in the UK (the views expressed in this blog are my own) and I am especially interested in making Church accessible to people who have no church background and also in how we disciple people in order to equip them to live out their faith in the 21st Century.
