At church yesterday we gave everyone a panel of card and asked them to colour it in with pens or paint. When we stuck them all together this was the result.
People were free to create their own designs, but we asked them to colour the opposite sides of any lines on their card in contrasting colours and this is what made the design work.
This activity was such a helpful reminder of the way that God brings unity and cohesion despite our individuality.
It is a reminder that church is about togetherness. That we are many people that form the whole, not many people who happen to turn up to the same place on Sunday just to get what we need.
The theme of our service was ‘What is God up to?’
During our time together We heard from people who talked about how they had seen God at work over the Summer (apparently he didn’t go on holiday or take time off!!). It was so encouraging to hear the way that God was at work in so many different situations and how he is changing people’s lives in, through and in spite of the circumstances they are facing.
We spent some time considering what God wants to be up to next and whether there are things that he is waiting for us to do as we listen to and are led by him.
Our art activity was designed by Stuart (thank God for his creativity) and the completed design only worked because people used contrasting colours around the lines that he had drawn in advance. In a similar way, the things that God wants us to do will only work with our involvement if we listen to and do what God says. Of course, God can find another way and accomplish his will without us but it is sad if we miss the opportunities that God has for us.
Christianity is about us following Jesus as Lord and yet sometimes it feels like the emphasis for some can be on coming to Jesus as a vending machine to get what we need.
Are we willing to follow Jesus as Lord and to prioritize what he wants or do we just want to push his buttons so that we can get what will make us happy and comfortable?
God has a design and a plan. Will we look to and join in with what God is doing or do we just want to do our own thing?
If you click on the picture to enlarge it you will notice that the top right panel has a picture of leaf with the words ‘No Two Alike Anywhere‘. God really can take our individuality and use who we are to accomplish his design!
We have the real privilege of joining with the creator of the universe in what he is doing, so what is stopping us?
