The One About Giving Up Too Easily

It was raining and it was cold and my children were asking to go home. We had been searching in the hedge for several minutes and we couldn’t find the geocache that we were looking for. The hedge had been cut recently and so we assumed that the cache had been knocked off or perhaps destroyed in the cutting and so we gave up.

When you find geocache, you can visit the geocaching website and write a log to say whether you found it or not. We put a ‘did not find’ for this one and a note that said it looked like it had gone missing. Within a few hours we received a message from the owner of the cache who said that they had been and checked and it was still there. They even added that since the cutting of the hedge that it was a lot easier to find and that you could actually see it through one of the gaps that had been created in the hedge.

camouflaged geocacheSo, Tracey and I returned and we eventually found it after several minutes of searching.

One we had replaced the cache I took this picture to show how well hidden it is. Click on the picture to enlarge it and see if you can spot the well hidden geocache. I will be very impressed if you can see it.

It strikes me that there is a lot in life that will discourage us. Terrible things happen and they can leave us wanting to give up.

How will we respond when we are left devastated, confused or hopeless?

We often need someone to show us the way and the good news is that Jesus promised his followers that he would be with us always. He wants to be our guide but will we turn to him and allow him to show us the way in the reality of life?

So, let me show you where the geocache was hidden, this is a closer photo.

Just in case you still can’t see it here is another picture.

When you look at the size of the geocache, it is hard to believe that we gave up because it looks so easy to find. This brighter side of the cache was pressed against the branches in the hedge and only it’s camouflaged side was showing. The cache is hard to see but not impossible and we gave up too easily (rain and tired children make it a lot easier to give up!)

My prayer is that I would put my hope and trust in Jesus and that I would allow him to strengthen guide me and lead me forward in every situation.

Jesus is God, he is all powerful, all-seeing and all-knowing. As I face the darkness and despair in life, what better guide and saviour could I want?

Hi, my name is Graeme and I’m married to a very patient wife. We have 4 children, 2 rabbits, a terrapin (and not a lot of peace and quiet!). I’m a Regional Minister for the Eastern Baptist Association in the UK (the views expressed in this blog are my own) and I am especially interested in making Church accessible to people who have no church background and also in how we disciple people in order to equip them to live out their faith in the 21st Century.
