Who or what is the most valuable to you?

£20 tissuesYesterday I started the service at OBC by auctioning of this bundle of 16 £20’s

Disappointingly for me the top offer was £30 and even worse than that, it turned out that the 12 year old who made the bid didn’t actually have the cash. 😦

What would you have bid?

£30 would be a real bargain if these were genuine £20’s but they are in fact a packet of tissues that cost me less than £1.

Although they look really valuable, they are actually pretty worthless unless you have a really runny nose.

In Philippians 3, Paul talked about all the things that were really valuable to him. He had been the most enthusiastic Pharisee that you could be and he was sure that God would be pleased with him but then he goes on to say;

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and  become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. (Philippians 3.7-9)

I wonder if there are things that we think are really valuable that are in fact worthless compared to knowing Jesus?

It’s not that the other things are worthless in themselves, it’s just that they are ‘worthless compared to the infinite value of knowing Jesus‘.

gollum preciousIf you have seen or read Lord of the Rings then you will be familiar with Gollum and his precious ring. The ring is the most important thing to him and so it dominates and ultimately consumes his life.

Gollum kills to keep the ring and he leaves his home community and lives alone because of the hold that the ring has on him.

The person or thing that is the most valuable to us will shape our lives. For this reason, it’s worth thinking about who that person or what that thing is.

Knowing Jesus is the most valuable thing in the universe, but is that reflected in our lives?

When we realize the value of our relationship with God, then it will begin to dominate and shape our lives. God only wants good for us and so he is the best person for us to be dedicating our lives to.

Who or what is the most valuable thing to you? What is your precious?

Is God worth more than anything else?

About honestaboutmyfaith

Hi, my name is Graeme and I’m married to a very patient wife. We have 4 children, 2 rabbits, a terrapin (and not a lot of peace and quiet!). I’m a Regional Minister for the Eastern Baptist Association in the UK (the views expressed in this blog are my own) and I am especially interested in making Church accessible to people who have no church background and also in how we disciple people in order to equip them to live out their faith in the 21st Century.
