Back to life, back to reality

back to workLots of us are returning to normal life after a Christmas spent having fun, relaxing and eating too much. That first day back at work after a holiday can be a killer and it’s all too easy to spend our lives regretting the fact that we can’t always be having lots of fun relaxing.

It’s weird how we idolize holiday times as perfect living because the truth is that we can’t live on a constant high. We need contrast in our lives because if there was never any ordinary how would we know when we were having fun?

Work is part of God’s plan for our lives. When he created the world in all it’s perfection his intention was that humans would work. Working hard is good for us but so is resting and it is clear from the Bible that God wants us to have a good work life balance.

I believe that God is in the ordinary, at work in our everyday lives. If we spend our lives being disappointed and wishing we were elsewhere then we make it hard for God to attract our attention so that he can work in and through us. Where God is at work, life and fulfilment will follow and this is something that makes our ordinary lives meaningful.

The Kutless song hero (see the Youtube clip below) reminds us of the difference we can make in our everyday lives. Lets choose to trust in God and to rely on him to empower us so that we can be a blessing to others.

When we restart normal living in these next few days what will our attitude be? May we celebrate the fun we have had as we also choose to live well in the ordinariness of life.
