Ironically the attendance winners were all absent

winner not hereThe three winners names were all read out and they were congratulated for their 100% attendance but then it was realized that none of them were there. The irony of this was only softened by the fact that at least one of them was on a school trip and so they had a good reason not to be there to be congratulated for their superb attendance.

This happened at a school assembly this week and it has definitely been one of my favourite parts of the week. I do love a bit of irony.

What is your attendance like? Do you turn up where and when you are supposed to? I don’t just mean physically, we all have had the experience of being in the right places but we are not really concentrating on what is going on.

It’s easy to focus on what ifs or what might have beens rather than to enjoy life.

Jesus promised a fulfilled life if we follow him but we have to choose to turn up to our own lives and to live that life in order to receive the promised fulfilment.

Worry will suck the life out of any joy you might be finding in the moment.

Putting energy into focusing on what might go wrong tomorrow will exhaust you in the present.

Dwelling on rather than dealing (learning from and moving on) with regrets will leave us absent in the moment we are supposed to be living.

So, are you present? Are you in attendance of your life right now?

Jesus wants to lead us into fulfilment but we need to follow and trust in him as well as choosing to live in that fulfilled life that he is giving to us.

life to the full

Hi, my name is Graeme and I’m married to a very patient wife. We have 4 children, 2 rabbits, a terrapin (and not a lot of peace and quiet!). I’m a Regional Minister for the Eastern Baptist Association in the UK (the views expressed in this blog are my own) and I am especially interested in making Church accessible to people who have no church background and also in how we disciple people in order to equip them to live out their faith in the 21st Century.

  1. Love it. Very similar happened at our final school assembly (many years ago…) The ‘winner’ had 100% attendance on the year, and very impressive attendance for the whole 5 years, I think something like 2 days off over 5 years. She wasn’t at the assembly, and yes much hilarity ensued when her name was read out and some spark said ‘she isn’t here.”. In her defence, she was in an exam, and this was the school’s mixup due to a scheduling problem she couldn’t take it at the time previously booked.
