Did you hear about the tortoise that crossed the M25? Yes, it’s true, a tortoise nicknamed Freeway crossed the UK’s busiest road and survived.
You can read all the details here, but one quote from the news story is: “It’s a miracle he survived. He could have been on the road for a long time before he was picked up. It was the busiest time of the day on one of the busiest roads in the country. He couldn’t have picked a worse place to go for a stroll.”
As I look at this picture of his route across the road it is amazing that he survived. When I first heard the story it reminded me that with God all things are possible. Sometimes when we look at problems we are overwhelmed by them but we also need to look to God who is bigger than anything that we will face.
If you are going through a tough and frightening time, can I encourage you to call on God?
May the journey of Freeway the tortoise encourage you that a sad ending isn’t inevitable. Miracles do happen, sometimes God rescues us out of a situation we are in but if he does not he will walk with us through those hard times acting as our guide, help and strength.
The other thing that encourages me about this story is that size and speed didn’t matter. Freeway isn’t especially quick but he made it. He isn’t especially big, but it meant that when cars drove over him that he survived because he was small enough (and because the wheels missed!) If you are feeling inadequate or slow then I hope that the story of Freeway will encourage you. God is with us and we can rely on him to empower and equip us to get through life. He promises to supply all of our needs.
If you are amazed by Freeway’s journey then you may want watch this short video about ducklings and a busy road. Don’t worry, they do make it!
