I had a busy weekend and on my way to a school assembly yesterday morning I felt exhausted. I arrived early and sat in the hall and was surprised by how quiet it was. I sat and thought about the phrase ‘Be still and know that I am God’.
After my few minutes of focusing on God life felt different. I was still tired and my sinuses were still blocked but my focus was on God and not on those things. My emotions and physical feelings were pulling me down, but looking to God lifted me up and helped me to move forwards.
When we are busy it’s easy to believe that we cannot find any peace and quiet but I believe that it’s up to us to take peace where we can find it. I could have done any number of things in those few minutes but God was waiting to talk. Lots of us are really busy and say we would like to stop but usually we are the ones causing our own busyness. Even the things that are there to help us relax can cause us more stress. There is so much on TV that we record it and then we get stressed that we don’t have time to watch it. We carry around phones that beep when people text or message us and we wonder why we feel like we don’t have any space from interruptions. We use cars to get places faster and so we exercise less and then wonder why we feel so lethargic.
When the advertisers tell us to have a break and to have a Kitkat, this picture is probably not what they have in mind. We all need a break sometimes but the Kitkat should be optional (especially if it looks like the one in the picture!)
When you think of all the things we fill our lives with, what could be better than talking with God and allowing him to work in our lives? Sometimes God changes our circumstances but he is always at work in us changing our attitude and helping us as we live within the circumstances we are facing.
Time to slow down? Have a break, talk with God!
I really loved this post. And to think that we sometimes, even without knowing it, add to our stress by the very things we’d hoped to relax with.
There is only one true place where we can find rest – in the presence of the Almighty– calm and still like a child being rocked by its mother.
Thank you for sharing. God bless you and your family!
